One of the most beautiful cities in Europe, Madrid is full of iconic landmarks that draw in millions of tourists every year. From old palaces to sprawling parks, here are some of the most popular sites to see when visiting this vibrant Spanish city.

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace is one of Madrid's most impressive landmarks. Built in 1734, it was the official residence of the Spanish Monarchy until 1931 and today houses a large collection of art works from all over Europe. The palace is open for guided tours throughout the day so visitors can admire its grand architecture and decorations up close.

Retiro Park

Retiro Park is another must-see destination when in Madrid. Located just east of the city center, it's a great place to take a stroll or relax on a bench by one of its many lakes and gardens. On Sundays, the park hosts an outdoor flea market where people come to sell antiques, secondhand clothes, books and more.

Plaza Mayor

Plaza Mayor is at the heart of Madrid's Old Town neighborhood and has been around since 1617. It's a bustling square filled with street performers and traditional restaurants serving up some delicious tapas dishes. Visitors can explore the nearby streets lined with souvenir shops or visit the Casa de la Panaderia building just off Plaza Mayor to learn about its historical past as a grain storage room during Medieval times.

To get the best out of your time in Madrid be sure to plan ahead and try to avoid peak tourist season which runs from April through August when crowds tend to flock in larger numbers than usual. During these months, it can be difficult to find tickets for attractions as well as accommodation closeby at reasonable prices unless you book far enough in advance - so keep that in mind when planning your trip!

Additionally, if you're looking for quieter spots with fewer people around then early morning hours are ideal for sightseeing or late afternoon/evening hours for leisurely strolls around town before it gets dark outside.
